When it comes to taking on ambitious works of jazz, one Buffalo jazz musician is not shy about giving it a try. Jon Lehning, a young and emerging jazz saxophonist, is accustomed to attempts at paying tribute to jazz that has influenced him significantly. Whether it be Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea’s Elektric Band, Wayne Shorter, or the Yellow Jackets, Lehning has gathered up some of the best in young talent to perform iconic jazz music. If the full-house turnout for a recent concert entitled Wayne’s World: The Music of Wayne Shorter held at Pausa Art House is an indication, audiences are showing they are appreciative of his efforts.
On Thursday, February 15th at Buffalo Iron Works, Lehning will present another highly focused jazz concert. Based on the jazz and funk interweaving made famous by the saxophonist Chris Potter Underground project, JazzBuffalo will present Jon Lehning Underground beginning at 8 pm. With a focus on the music of Chris Potter and others paving a new path in jazz. Chris Potter’s recent album of work, entitled The Dreamer Is The Dream, was nominated for this year’s Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. Potter was a winner in this category five years ago for his album Unity.
Here is a brief clip on the Chris Potter Underground project that gives you a good sense of the genius of Chris Potter and the Underground sound:
JazzBuffalo recently caught up with Jon Lehning for a quick interview on this upcoming concert at Buffalo Iron Works:
How did the idea for the Jon Lehning Underground concert come about?
“The concept for this group is that we're trying to bring together the wide range of musical influences available to us as modern musicians. I have always tried to emulate an open-minded approach with my own playing and drawn from as many different sources of inspiration as I possibly could. I find that I'm most inspired by other musicians and groups who do the same thing. For me, there is a fundamental core to good music that remains true regardless of its style. This holds true of music made today, 20 years ago or 200 years ago. Quality music continuously maintains its relevance.
I've worked with musicians both in Buffalo and seen many others in the greater jazz landscape who share this mindset. However, no group better encapsulates this for me than The Chris Potter Underground. First and foremost, Chris is a definitive voice on his instrument and his group, in general, is comprised of exceedingly high-level musicians. That alone would make their group great. But what puts them over the top for me is how seamlessly they integrate their various influences and express them in such an exciting and unique way. I have listened to and admired their work for a very long time, hence our homage to their namesake.”
How would you describe the music the audience can expect to hear?
“We will be playing music from The Chris Potter Underground and many other musicians who share the same conceptual approach as well as our own original material. The point of the performance is not to try and mimic exactly how they played, but rather, share the same improvisatory mindset they did in performing this music. Ideally, this material would never be played the same way twice. My hope is to share with people music they may not be familiar with and try to present it an intriguing way. Specifically, with this group, to show how the worlds of jazz and funk can be fused together to create something new. Finding a way to take the jazz tradition that has built up over decades and looking to meld it with more modern influences is something I think people really respond to.”
What can you share about the band members you put together?
“Joining me in the band are Harry Graser on piano, Adam Bronstein on guitar, Anthony Henry on bass and Joe Goretti on drums. We have all worked together in many contexts whether it be in other groups I led, their own projects or as sidemen in other people's groups and they're always wonderful to play with. But what makes them particularly well suited for this group is all of our different backgrounds and influences that we're bringing to the band. They're very open-minded players and it's that element of surprise that makes them so fun to play with, especially in a context like this.”
What does this music say about the state of jazz today in Buffalo? Overall?
“I think this music shows where jazz has come from and where it’s going. Jazz has never been a stagnant art form, it constantly grows and evolves to adapt to what's happening around it. It's why it's such a fulfilling thing to pursue as a musician. You never get to the "end" there's always more to hear, to learn, to pull into your playing. For me it's not about forgetting what came before, the traditions of jazz are the bedrock anything today stands upon. But rather, finding ways to take those historical elements and apply them to the musical context of today.”
Lehning brings his group to the stage of Buffalo Iron Works on Thursday, February 15th at 8 pm. This also marks the first collaboration between JazzBuffalo and Buffalo Iron Works in presenting emerging jazz artists and concepts at the Cobblestone District venue. Tickets are $10 pre-sale and $12 the day of the show. For tickets, go to http://buffaloironworks.com/event/jazzbuffalo-presents-jon-lehning-underground/.

Saturday, December 16th: Scott Tixier with the Walter Kemp 3oh at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center at 7 pm and 9:15 pm
We are pleased to present jazz violinist extraordinaire Scott Tixier and the Walter Kemp 3oh! in concert as a dynamic jazz quartet of violin, piano, bass, and drums. This quartet promises an unforgettable evening. Sunnyside recording artist Scott Tixier is one of his generation’s extraordinary talents, having made a name for himself as a violinist-composer of wide-ranging ambition, individuality and drive — “the future of jazz violin” in the words of Downbeat Magazine, and “A remarkable improviser and a cunning jazz composer” in those of NPR. The New York City-based Tixier was born in Montreuil, France and has performed with some of the leading lights and legends in music.
Tixier studied classical violin at the conservatory in Paris. Following that, he studied improvisation as a self-educated jazz musician. He has been living in New York for over a decade where he performed and recorded with a wide range of artists, including, Stevie Wonder, Roger Waters, Kenny Barron, John Legend, Ed Sheeran, Charnett Moffett, Cassandra Wilson, Chris Potter, Christina Aguilera, Common, Anthony Braxton, Joss Stone, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Ariana Grande, Wayne Brady, Gerald Cleaver, Tigran Hamasyan and many others.
The “Rising Star” violinist (Downbeat Magazine) will be joined by Blujazz artist Walter Kemp 3, and the "Walter Kemp 3oh!." Walter’s father, a Carnegie Hall composer, sparked Walter's early interest in the piano. This internationally recognized ensemble, including expressively open piano, mind-blowing percussion, rhythmic vocals and “punchy bass” dominates in an array of venues.
The 3oh!’s debut release, Dark Continent, brings Kemp’s innate abilities to the forefront. Having joined forces with long-time musical collaborators, RiShon Odel Northington, recording and touring bassist for GRAMMY-nominated Najee, and percussive phenom David “Teaspoon” Hulett, the trio "swings with excitement... anything but the expected piano trio." (George W. Harris, LA Jazz Weekly) As featured artists on Toronto’s Jazz FM 91.1, and with a live performance heralded as “the best...incredibly beautiful music,” this is just the beginning for these promising young artists. Beyond Jazz – Stephane Wrembel
Guitarist and Gypsy Jazz artist Stephane Wrembel visit Buffalo on Friday, November 10th at 9:30 pm at Sportsmen Tavern. Here is further information: Noted guitarist and composer Stephane Wrembel makes a return to Buffalo for another concert at The Sportsmen's. He has composed 3 scores for Woody Allen, performed at the Oscars with Hanz Zimmerman, and recently sold out Carnegie Hall with a program he curated that featured guest's Al DiMeola and Stochelo Rosenberg. He’s been called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone. Woody Allen recruited him to score the theme to the 2012 Academy Award-winning film Midnight in Paris, and he performed live during this year’s Oscar telecast. To say that French-born guitarist/composer Stephane Wrembel—who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside—has already had a remarkable career would be an understatement. But this virtuoso, who is now Brooklyn-based, has truly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music. In her 3 months in ECMC and ongoing rehab her father was and is by her side. This benefit is to support the family of Joseph Calato through their medical expenses and loss of income. The benefit will include a jazz performance by Joe Calato, Sr. on vibes, Alec Dube on drums, Harry Graser on piano, and Mark Harris on bass. Fantastic painting of jazz icons and jazz art by Barbara Calato will be auctioned off also. In April of 2014, the first official posting of JazzBuffalo was made. JazzBuffalo, a d.b.a. and brand of the Greater Buffalo Jazz Society started out as a dream. Since then, JazzBuffalo has become more than a dream. It has become a major resource for jazz lovers and jazz musicians. All who have the same dream in mind. Which is to keep jazz alive and to build jazz awareness and appreciation.
JazzBuffalo has reached an important inflection point in its tremendous organic growth. A growth fueled by audiences and their supportive enthusiasm for jazz. Thus, JazzBuffalo embarks on its first-ever Capital Fundraising Campaign: “Keep JazzBuffalo Alive” to further evolve JazzBuffalo into an important asset of the overall Buffalo Arts & Culture Scene vital to the resurgence of our great city.
When at an inflection point towards growth, it is often a point to also look back briefly at the many accomplishments that have brought JazzBuffalo to where it is today. JazzBuffalo has benefited from subscribers to the weekly newsletter, partnerships, enthusiastic audiences, passionate jazz musicians, and caring community-minded people who are passionate about jazz and helping to keep jazz alive. Let us look at what has evolved since 2014:
JazzBuffalo Jazz In Town Newsletter has reached over 1,000 active subscribers who benefit from news about jazz news and events in the Greater Buffalo jazz scene
We have created supportive partnerships to open venues to jazz and to present jazz with such organizations as MusicalFare Theatre, Pausa Art House, 189, Road Less Traveled Theatre, The Meeting House, The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Hotel Henry, Tappo Restaurant, The Hollow Bistro, and more...

Have presented international jazz artists at MusicalFare Cabaret Lounge, highlighted by the appearance of 8-time Grammy Nominee Tierney Sutton
Provided promotional, producing, and programming support services to the Northwest Jazz Festival and The Albright-Knox Art of Jazz Series
Introduced, over the past three years, jazz series and themed/concept performances designed to help build audience awareness and appreciation for jazz
Presented important jazz documentary screenings of Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary and I Called Him Morgan through partnership with The Screening Room
Provided paid performing opportunities for well over 150 - 200 jazz musicians in the Greater Buffalo Region
Produced programming for the month-long April Is Jazz Appreciation Month celebration and hosted a successful International Jazz Day celebration that raised over $1,000 for the MS Walk and the National MS Society
We will be entering our 4th annual JazzBuffalo Poll that reached a level of 2200 poll votes last year in nearly 30 categories
As you can see, the organic growth of JazzBuffalo has been tremendous and can be contributed to the overwhelming support of enthusiastic audiences throughout Greater Buffalo.
Where do we go from here? JazzBuffalo is launching a Capital Fundraising Campaign entitled: Keep JazzBuffalo Alive Campaign! Our goal is to raise $10,000 to achieve important milestones that will help provide enhanced and robust jazz services to the Greater Buffalo Community. What will the money be used for?
